The original concept for the nearby Meridian Centre included public open space. Land was acquired subsequently by the Council and laid out as the Meridian Park. Planning permission for ‘Works to provide a public park including ground moulding, landscaping, children's play areas, sitting areas, kiosks, war memorial, paths and shelters’ was granted on 15 June 1990 (Planning ref: LW/90/0451). The war memorial was a long time coming – it was finally unveiled on 19 October 2012. Earlier that year, on 25 May, the new Jubilee Gym was also officially opened on the north side of the park. Although the Meridian passes through the park, its path has never been formally marked. The signs showing the park’s name are believed to have been removed in 2008.
