On 21 August 1996, The Newshopper announced that plans were afoot by Bromley Council to mark the path of the Meridian through the borough with special plaques and a line of native trees, which were to be planted in co-operation with the Millennium Tree Line project. In the event, little if any of these plans seems to have come to fruition. This undated obelisk is one of just three markings (excluding trees) known to have been made in the borough following the announcement and the only one to carry the words ‘The London Borough of Bromley’. The inscriptions, which are carried on the north and the south sides, are shallow and often went unseen by those who passed it until around 2013 when the lettering was enhanced by the use of black paint.
