It was possibly in 1984, that a finger sign displaying the distance to the North and South Poles was first erected. Its replacement (installed at the time of the millennium?) has additional pointers. Whilst the old sign gave the distance to the poles as 2,513 and 9,895 miles respectively, the replacement gives them as 2,517 and 9,919 miles … a pole-to-pole distance of 12,408 miles for the old and 12,436 miles for the new. This compares with a distance of 12,430 miles on the WGS84 ellipsoid.
