This mark on the track leading up to the award-winning vineyards at Breaky Bottom dates from 1984 when its owners Di & Peter Hall hosted a variety of events in June as part of the Meridian’s centenary celebrations. Their 1983 Seyval Blanc was selected, by the National Maritime Museum & Old Royal Observatory (as it was then known) as one of the ‘official’ wines to celebrate the ‘centenary’ of the Meridian in 1984. Its wholesale price from Davy’s Wine Vaults in Greenwich was £48 per case (of 12 bottles). When erected, the sign carried the following wording ‘North / [vertical arrow pointing upwards] / 0º / LONG / [Vertical arrow pointing downwards] / South / Greenwich Meridian / EST / 1884’, which was carved into the wood then overpainted. Although much of this could still just about be made out in 2011, by 2018, most of the text was invisible.
