When the London Borough of Waltham Forest was created in 1965 though the amalgamation of the boroughs of Chingford, Leyton and Walthamstow, the Meridian had only been marked with paving slabs in the latter. To even things out, four identical slabs were laid in the other two former boroughs in 1984. The total cost was £2000. The four slabs, of which this is one, were all positioned with the help of the Ordnance Survey. A special laying ceremony was held here in Essex Road on 26 June – a day of national celebrations that had been designated as ‘Meridian Day’. Although it had been hoped that all four slabs would be in place by this date, it is not clear if this was actually achieved.
