May 1996

In May 1996, when the Millennium Tree Line (MTL) project was still in its infancy, it made its second ever planting alongside the pre-existing marker bollard. The pair of figures standing in front of it in the May 1996 image set are Councillor Ling (carrying out his first civic duty as Mayor) and Rodney Freeman (father of MTL’s Project Manager, Catherine Freeman). The tree chosen was a rowan (sorbus aucuparia). Having subsequently died, it was replaced at the time of the millennium with an oak.
